Abiquiu Lake

October 1, 2014

Today was cleaning day...vacuum, dust, ac vents, slide gaskets.... Later I sat in the sun and worked on the rug I am making. Cold, cold nights and cool days. I felt like I could finally hang my Halloween wall/window hanging.

It was cold again today so we decided not to kayak. I updated the software on my Macbook and iPad and the rest of the day seemed to disappear. We have been on the go for so long, I am yearning to sit still for awhile.

We left one lake and drove to another today. Driving away from Navaho Lake we could see up into the canyon we had paddled on Tuesday. We had to cross the dam which had a narrow road with no guardrails and the sides dropped off on both sides with the bottom far below. Not fun. The ride through the New Mexico countryside was similar to what we had been seeing with the exception of the very white mountaintops in the distance which I somehow didn't get a picture of.

When we stopped for gas there was a pickup with a hot air balloon basket in the back. This is the week of the big balloon fiesta in Albuquerque that we were at two years ago. We were on the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation and the price of gas was only $2.98/gal. We like it! Shortly after filling up and back on the road, a coyote crossed the road in front of us. We didn't see the roadrunner, though. We did see one a couple of years ago running around a campground.

We didn't have a reservation at Abiquiu Lake for tonight but managed to get the last electric site where we could stay one night before moving to the site we had reserved. The road down into the campground was fairly steep and the view was magnificent with the big blue lake and the striped cliffs of many colors. The Army Corp of Engineer Park is only $8 per night with a senior pass.

After setting up, we sat out in the sun for awhile. Once it was dark, we took a walk around the campground to look at the stars. When we were further north and in the middle of the summer, the stars didn't appear until after midnight. It was great to be still up and around in order to see them. It was a cool, crisp, fall feeling walk. It does get cool fast. The lake is at an elevation of 6400 feet and we are a couple hundred feet above that.

We didn't paddle today as we had to wait for people to move out of the site we reserved so we could move in. We did get the chance to finally Skype with Aaron and see our very busy grandchildren. They, of course, are beautiful and so full of energy. Can't wait to see them in person.

After we moved, we were across the road from the campground hosts and we chatted with them for awhile before sitting in the sun to admire the view. We are in the uppermost campsite and pulled in so we have the view our our big front picture window. Luckily our electric cord and water hose are long enough to reach under the motorhome in order for us to hook up that way.

In the afternoon, Ted drove in to Espanola to pick up a few groceries and to see if he could find someone to help him with the corrupted operating system on his computer...no luck. I sat in the sun and worked on my rug. What a beautiful spot!!
