Devil's Lake

We spent the morning catching up on our blog and getting organized.  It was a beautiful bright sunny day but windy and there were whitecaps on the lake.  After lunch we drove in to the town of Devil's Lake.  The causeway off the island is five miles long and then it was another ten miles to town.  Crossing the causeway, we saw what at first we thought were redwing blackbirds in the marshes.  On closer inspection, they had yellow heads and throats.  We looked them up in our bird book and they are yellow-headed blackbirds, a species only found in the west.

The land is low and mostly flat.  The road travels next to or across arms of the lake.  There are many dirt roads leading off the main road, most of them closed because the water is high.  We saw very few houses but Devil's Lake had one of only ten Walmarts in the state of North Dakota.  We stopped there to pick up a few cosmetic items but couldn't wait to get out of there.  It is the Walmart that time forgot... no fresh food, and crowded, narrow aisles.

We drove around town and finally found the post office and a really nice grocery store, Leevers.  Their store brand was something we had never heard of.  We feel like we are in another world.  We returned home and sat outside until dinner time.  After dinner we went for a bike ride around the two campgrounds.  It stays light until quarter of ten but started getting chilly after eight so we gave up and went inside.  Since we were in North Dakota, we decided to watch Fargo, a movie neither of us had seen.  What a tragedy this true story was.
